Choon Nam Ong, Ph.D.

Choon Nam Ong is the Director of the National University of Singapore’s Environmental Research Institute (NERI).  His main research interest is in environmental health, and he has made significant contributions to the understanding of xenobiotics and carcinogenesis, in particular the molecular mechanisms of how carcinogen causes cellular and DNA damage and how to prevent it.  He chaired the International Expert Panel of the Singapore’s NEWater Study.  At present, Ong is a member of WHO Drinking Water Guidelines development committee.  He is also engaged in studies of pre-systemic metabolism of bromate, and studies identifying trace contaminants of potential concern in recycled water. Ong has published more than 250 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI).  He has also been an Associate Editor of Environmental Research since 1995 and also on the editorial or advisory board of several international journals.  Ong received a B.Sc. and B.Sc. Hons. from the National University of Singapore.
